It's believed that the fancy footwork -- and limited arm movement -- integral to Irish step dancing was produced by the tight quarters of Irish homes.

Margaret Cleary, born in London to Irish parents, learned Irish step dancing at a young age and now teaches her own children (and her community) through her dance-instruction school. Cleary's young daughters have danced for most of their lives -- so, to them, Irish step dance seems almost like second nature. Irish step dancing is relatively inexpensive to undertake, but the expense can grow with skill level -- more skill eventually requires better dance shoes and costumes embroidered with Celtic designs.
