    Materials:

    water hose
    leaf blower
    rubber cleaning pad
    drywall sander
locomotive car with a cleaning pad
    large cleaning brush

    1. When plants are all in the ground, water them well.

Tip: Mark says to water the track when the plants needed watering. If the plants are wet underneath the mulch, don't water.

    2. Spray off all the dust from the tracks and rocks.

Note: Keeping the track clean is very important.

    3. Use a rubber pad to rub over tracks to clean. You can use a pad that connected to a locomotive (figure A) or you can clean by hand. A drywall sander works well also, but it must be equipped with a rubber pad—not a sander.

Tip: A leaf blower is a great way to keep the big debris off the track.

    4. Large cleaning brushes come in handy to clear small debris by hand.

    Running of the Trains

Three types of trains were chosen for the Oak Ridge Children's Museum garden railroad:

Mallet steam engines are utilized to pull the trains.

A passenger train is vital for any railroad operation.

And don't forget to add some variety—in this case, a logging train.
