    Figure A

If you're remodeling your kitchen, you may not have considered furnishing it with used appliances. But if you're on a budget, a used range, refrigerator, washer or dryer may be just what you need.

Many cities have used-appliance stores, where older appliances are repaired and resold. At such a store, a washing machine, for example, is dismantled (figure A), and worn parts are replaced with new ones. Then a load of laundry is run through the washer to make sure the machine works properly.

You can often get a great deal at a used-appliance store, finding a refrigerator for as little as $125 or a range for $100. On the other hand, you may also experience some odor or maintenance problems with used appliances. Before you buy, check the warranty policy, and make sure the store will work with you until you're satisfied.

If you don't like the color of an appliance, you can hire an electrostatic painter to repaint the appliance the color of your choice.
