If you're in the market for a new electric range, here's a quick guide to their features. A low-end range typically sells for $500, whereas a high-end range can cost more than $800. The difference lies primarily in the number of features and the ease of cleanup. The most expensive ranges often use a glass-top surface (figure A) and a smooth push-button control panel (figure B). Both features permit very easy cleanup. Higher-end units use an electronic thermostat, which is more accurate than a traditional analog thermostat. Cheaper ranges feature electric coils and drip pans, which can be difficult to clean. The temperature is controlled with dials, and an analog thermostat can be off by as much as 100 degrees. The appearance of the professional range (figure C) in the home kitchen is an emerging trend with a big price tag: about $4,000. If you prepare gourmet meals on a regular basis, this may be the range for you.
