  • Homegrown Hint: USDA Map
  • From "Fresh from the Garden"
    episode DFFG-101

In this "Homegrown Hint", Joe explains how a map, created by the United States Department of Agriculture, offers a helpful tool for selecting and cultivating plants. Plants are classified according to the amount of cold weather they can handle, and the map also indicates the average date for the last frost in spring. (Thirty-two degrees is the temperature normally associated with frost and is the base temperature used for this map.)

Also, extension services produce pamphlets that relate to gardening issues or soil problems in their specific areas. The agents are often familiar with the latest scientific research and can offer recommendations for growing a healthy vegetable garden. Some offices also use trained volunteer Master Gardeners to assist or advise home gardeners on how to construct their gardens or care for the plants.
