    Mulching is essential for bulbs, says show host Kim Haworth. It prevents the soil from changing temperature, keeps lights from getting to the bulbs, and protects bulbs when temperatures dip. After you plant bulbs, apply a two-three inch layer of mulch on top of the soil (figure A).
