    One more part of preparing a planting area for bulbs is fertilizing. Make your own concoction for bulbs by mixing equal parts of sand, bone meal, and blood meal. Mix around five pounds per 100 square feet. Apply it across the top of the soil using your hands or a trowel (figure A). Then turn the soil before planting your bulbs.
