  • One large corner of the garden is dedicated to vine crops, which need ample room to spread. Maureen makes a mound of soil, surrounded by a trench, which will catch and distribute water (figure E). She firms the base of the hill before planting pattypan squash (Cucurbita Pepo), then makes a secondary depression around the plant to collect additional water figure F).

  • The largest planting area is for row crops. These crops are set at intervals defined by each vegetable. The back of each seed packet gives all the necessary info on the plant. Maureen plants three rows of corn (Zea Mays). Each kernel is planted 1-1/2" deep and 12" apart, along the length of each row. The rows are spread 3' apart, measuring from the center point of each row (figure G).

    Spaced around the garden are strong steel obelisks: they'll provide visual interest and provide support for tall and climbing vegetables such as pole beans, peas and tomatoes (figure H).
