  • Blood meal is a powdered blood product used to bring up the nitrogen in nitrogen-poor soils. Also, because blood contains iron, bone meal will prevent iron deficiency in the soil (figure E).

  • Bone meal, made up of 3 percent nitrogen and 15 percent phosphorus, is a cure for overly acidic soils.

  • Alfalfa meal is made from alfalfa by-products. Alfalfa is a legume plant that has the ability to take atmospheric nitrogen and transfer it to the soil, making it available for other plants to absorb (figure F).

  • Cottonseed meal, with pieces of the shell in the bag, also offers enrichment to the soil.

When starting work on an abandoned garden site, there is no way to know the condition of the soil. Deep tilling and working in amendments is very important in getting the soil prepared for the garden you want to grow. For ease of application, combinations of the above-listed amendments are also available to the gardener.

    Time spent: 4 hours.

Total time spent so far: 10 hours.
