    From "Fresh from the Garden"
    episode DFFG-207

A bubbling fountain (figure A) adds pleasant sounds to the garden that will work together with the intense smells of the herbs to create quite an impact for guests (not to mention how much you're going to enjoy it!). For this project you'll need a fountain kit and a sturdy base (figure B). This water feature requires electricity, so make sure you place it near an outlet, and be sure the outlet is grounded with a GFI (Ground Fault Interrupt) for safety.

    1. The first step in this project is to make a level, sturdy base for the fountain. Use a leftover steppingstone from the path as the base (figure C). The base must be perfectly even, or the water won't be level in the urn -- and you don't want it to be unbalanced and tip over when it's full of water.

    2. Once the steppingstone base is secure and level, set the urn on top (figure D) and place the pump in the bottom of the urn. When you fill the urn with water, the pump will make the water bubble up and create a quiet splashing noise. The water will move enough to add sound to the garden but not enough to flow over the top of the urn.

    3. Add stones to raise the fountain to its proper height (figure E). Then fill the urn half full with water (don't get it too full until you see how the pump works). Add water slowly until you get the effect you like (figure F).

Now you have an ideal place to hang out while you anticipate how great the herbs will look -- and taste -- when they get a little bigger!
