    From "Fresh from the Garden"
    episode DFFG-304

    (Continued from page 2)

The second structure Joe visits is a hoophouse (a plastic tentlike building built over a simple metal frame). He and the owner discuss space maximization and temperature control.

    Hoophouse

Brenda Beckham's greenhouse is a hoophouse, an arched metal frame wrapped in clear plastic (figure L). The tentlike structure is an inexpensive alternative to traditional glass-paned greenhouses.

The interior (figure M) is packed with native plants being reproduced, herbs, vegetables, flowers, even olive trees (figure N).

The interior temperature is maintained in a number of ways:

    • A propane heater (figure O)

    • A ventilation fan

    • Heating mats for seedlings (figure P)

    • The plastic skin of the greenhouse itself, which can be covered with an adjustable shade cloth as needed (figure Q).
