The food comes from food manufacturers, wholesalers, farmers markets, caterers, and local food drives. Executive director Bill Bolling started the ACFB in 1979 out of the back of a pickup truck. - The Food Banks Community Garden Initiative helps neighborhood groups plan, organize, and maintain stronger communities one garden at a time. Many of these gardens are found in low-income neighborhoods, where the produce grown in the garden stays in the community. This encourages better nutrition and social interaction, while reducing family food budgets and beautifying communities.
- Community Garden Coordinator Fred Conrad plays a key role in helping these local gardens get up and running. Much of his workday is spent with volunteer crews, clearing land, weeding beds, or planting and pulling crops to help the gardens organizers on an as-needed basis.
