  • Caring for Christmas Cactus
  • From "The Dirt On..."
    episode DTDO-118

    PHOTO
Christmas cactus is a spectacularly decorative plant, producing masses of delicate jungle flowers in red, white, pink and orange just in time for the holidays. They bloom every year with very little care and can live for 25 years or more.

Here's how to keep your Christmas cactus thriving for many Christmases to come:

After the holidays when the flowering is over, set the cactus outdoors if you live in a frost-free climate. In cold climates, keep it indoors until the weather warms in late spring. Keep it in a cool, bright spot out of direct sun. Before watering, check soil moisture with your finger. Water thoroughly when the top half-inch of soil dries out.

These plants are typically available from November through January at most garden centers or grocery stores.
