Q: I have a lot of evergreen pine trees in my yard, and I have a hard time getting grass to grow underneath them. What can I plant that will make the area look nice?

A: (Gardening expert Walter Reeves) Underneath pine trees is usually very dry. You can’t grow grass, but you can plant other plants!

The pine needles and leaves that fall make the ground underneath very acidic, so remember to choose plants that can thrive in acidic soil.

When digging to plant, it’s inevitable that you will find a lot of roots underneath the pine. Don’t cut large, anchor roots! They provide moisture and nutrients to the tree. You can remove the smaller ones.

Plants that grow well under pine trees include the following:

    • Azaleas
    • Hydrangea
    • Rhododendron
    • Bleeding heart
    • Hosta
    • Variegated ivy
    • Groundcover strawberry
    • Lily-of-the-valley
