If you have a beautiful plant in your garden, why not share it with others? Take the Lenten rose, for example. If it's healthy and growing a bit outside its boundaries, you can divide it. Let DIY gardening expert Walter Reeves tell you all you need to know about this plant as well as show you how you can share it with others.

The Lenten rose is a hellebore; it's a member of the genus Helleborus. The popular names, Lenten and Christmas rose, comes from its winter- and early-springtime blooming habit. Hellebores love shade and need very rich, well-draining soil. They also need to be kept moist. You'll find them in white and various shades of pink and purple.

The plant we used in our demonstration is big and healthy. So if you wanted to dig up a shoot and replant it, it would be a good plant to choose.

After you've dug up the plant, put it in a pot so you can give it to a friend. Just make sure that it's planted outside in conditions it will like. Established plants should be planted in the spring, using a little compost. And the Lenten rose is self-seeding, so it will keep coming back.
