    A new fence and gate accent the landscape makeover that Jason Cameron and the Desperate Landscapes team fashioned for a beach cottage. Below, tips on how to build the gate:

    These tips will make gate building a little easier:

  • Build a gate frame one-half inch smaller than the space you want to fill.
  • Install a "Z" brace from the bottom of the hinge side running up to the latch side to provide extra support.
  • Jason made arrow cuts (figure A) on each end of his lumber and fit it neatly into the corners of his frame.
    (Or, you can cut a 45-degree angle on both ends of the lumber and fit the brace that way as well.)
  • Secure the brace with wood glue and wood screws.
  • Install hinges.
  • Position gate on fence post.
  • Mark holes for hardware.
  • Drill pilot holes.
  • Hang gate (figure B).
