'Chicago Luster' viburnum Viburnum dentatum 'Chicago Luster' (also called 'Synnestvedt')This deciduous shrub has creamy-white flowers in spring followed by "metallic" blue fruits that age to black. Mature size: 6-12 feet tall and wide. Berries will attract songbirds. Foliage turns golden-yellow in fall. It does well in full sun to part shade. USDA Zones 3-7 Cost: $65 each
'Taunton' yew Taxus x media 'Tauntonii'This needled evergreen is good for hedges, foundation plantings or screens. 'Taunton' is resistant to winter burn and tolerates the heat of the summer. Mature size: about three to four feet tall and five to six feet wide. It does well in sun or part shade. It is deer- and rabbit resistant and is tolerant of drought and pollution. Cinnamon fern (Osmunda cinnamomea)This large fern is great for making a dramatic foliage statement. In spring, one of the many new fronds that appears is a cinnamon-colored fertile frond. Fast-growing perennial Needs moist soil; tolerates wet sites Prefers partial to light shade but can handle full sun in cooler climates as long as it gets plenty of water.. It can grow up to five feet tall if watered regularly, but most top out at three feet tall. USDA Zones 3-8 Cost: $15 each
'Green Velvet' boxwood Buxus 'Green Velvet'Boxwood is an evergreen shrub that gives structure to the garden. 'Green Velvet' keeps its green color throughout the winter (without turning dark). 'Blue Billow' hydrangea (Hydrangea macrophylla 'Blue Billow')This hydrangea has blue lacecap flowers that fade to a reddish color in fall. Mature size: three feet tall and wide It does well in part shade to full sun. USDA Zone 6B-9; susceptible to late spring frosts. Flowers are about 3-1/2 inches wide.
