    'Emerald' arborvitae
    'Emerald' arborvitae
    Thuja occidentalis 'Emerald'

Dense, pyramidal conifers, these shrubs will provide a screen between Hyesun and her neighbor's home. The needled foliage remains deep green all year and isn't prone to winter discoloration.

  • Mature size: 15 feet high and three to four feet wide.
  • It has a moderate growth rate.
  • It prefers full sun to light shade
  • USDA Zones 3-8
  • Cost: $285 for 3

    Allegheny serviceberry
    Allegheny serviceberry
    Amelanchier laevis

This large deciduous multi-trunk shrub produces dangling clusters of white flowers in the spring and good fall foliage color.

  • Mature size: 15-25 feet tall.
  • It prefers sun to part shade.
  • Birds love the purplish berries.
  • It's low maintenance.
  • It's considered a "wire-friendly" tree in many communities because it won't get too tall to interfere with power, phone or cable lines.
  • Cost: $173

    Knockout rose
    'Pink Knockout' rose
    Rosa 'Pink Knockout'

A member of the Knockout series of roses that are known for their low maintenance, this cultivar is a drought-tolerant rose that's resistant to blackspot and mildew.

  • It blooms from spring until first hard frost.
  • Mature size: 3-1/2 feet tall and four feet wide.
  • It performs best with at least five hours of direct sun daily.
  • USDA Zones 4-9
  • Cost: $80 each
Note: we also planted a standard Knock Out rose. It cost $52.

    'Butterfly Blue' scabiosa
    Scabiosa columbaria 'Butterfly Blue'

Also known as the pincushion flower, scabiosa is a low-maintenance perennial that comes in a variety of colors from yellow and white to pink, purple, red and maroon. The blossoms of 'Butterfly Blue' are lavender-blue.

  • Mature size: 12 to 18 inches tall and 12 inches wide.
  • It blooms from early summer to frost.
  • It prefers full sun but will adapt to part shade or sometimes even light shade.
  • USDA Zones 3-8

    Dianthus gratianopolitanus Firewitch'

Perennial dianthus has evergreen, grass-like foliage and blooms from mid spring until late summer. 'Firewitch' has fragrant, hot-pink flowers.

  • It has bluish-gray foliage.
  • Mature size: foliage is three to four inches tall with 8- to 12-inch spread. Flower stalks are six to eight inches tall.
  • Prefers full sun to part shade.
  • USDA Zones 3-9.
  • Maintenance tip: Shear flowers after bloom to encourage additional blooms.

    Marguerite daisy
    Marguerite daisy
    Argyranthemum frutescens or Chrysanthemum frutescens

A perennial that's hardy only to USDA 9b, this plant is treated as an annual in most of the country. It's the only annual Jason used in Hyesun's landscape (replacing annuals every year is a chore that she doesn't have time for).

  • Marguerite daisies come in pink, yellow and white.
  • They flower from mid spring to frost.
  • They prefer full sun to part shade.

    Bearded iris
    Bearded iris, German iris

  • Prefers full sun
  • It does well in USDA Zones 3-11.
  • Maintenance tip: Divide when they become crowded to keep them healthy and blooming.
  • Cost: $150 for 10
