    'Summer Wine' ninebark
    'Summer Wine' ninebark
    Physocarpus opulifolius 'Summer Wine', or 'Seward'

    'Summer Wine' ninebark is a deciduous shrub that's prized for its dark purple foliage and white flowers in summer. It's often used as a dark background for light-color plants.

  • Mature size: about four to six feet tall and wide.
  • It prefers full sun to light shade.
  • It produces best foliage color and flowers in full sun.
  • USDA Zones 2-8
  • Cost: $82

    Pelargonium domesticum

    The regal geranium has large, usually two-toned flowers about two to five inches across. A shrubby perennial in USDA Zone 10 and south, it's grown as an annual in most of the country.

  • Regal geraniums prefer some afternoon shade in hot summers.

    Hosta 'Gold Standard'

    Hostas are an easy-to-care-for, low-maintenance perennial that's a good choice for beginners. This selection has heart-shaped golden leaves and is an American Hosta Society award winner.

  • 'Gold Standard' grows to about two feet high and spreads three to four feet.
  • It has pinkish/lavender flowers in late July.
  • It prefers full shade.
  • USDA Zones 3-8

    African daisy, or cape daisy
    Osteospermum

    This sun-loving, daisy-like flower is a perennial that's hardy only to USDA Zone 10, so in most parts of the country, it's grown as an annual. It comes in white, pink, yellow, blue and purple and often has a contrasting center.

  • Osteospermum needs well-drained soil.
  • Deadhead on a regular basis to encourage flowering.

    This evergreen azalea has lavender flowers in May.

  • Mature size: four feet tall and five feet wide.
