Project 2: Install lattice below porch

The exposed underside of the porch is unsightly and needs some dressing up. Plus, a barrier will keep critters from getting underneath the porch. Jason bought lattice at a home improvement center to hang on the porch.

    Tips for hanging lattice:

  • Cut the lattice to size.
  • Make a chalk line on the lattice as a guide (figure B)
  • Use a carbide-tipped blade on your saw (figure C). This is especially helpful if you will be cutting through any staples on the lattice and it will help prevent splintering.

  • To hang the lattice, Jason attached 2x4s to the porch posts using 16-penny nails and a framing gun (figure D).
  • Use a staple gun to attach the lattice to the 2" x 4" rails (figure E)

    Project 3: Install landscape lighting

The renovated yard will be highlighted at night, thanks to the addition of low-voltage landscape lights.

    Tips for installing landscape lighting:

  • Assemble lights per manufacturer's instructions. Lighting kits are available at home improvement centers and directions for assembly may vary. Read instructions before assembling.
  • Determine where you'd like to place lights and dig a trench for the wiring. You'll want to bury the wire so noone trips on it (figure F)
  • Assemble the transformer per manufacturer's instructions and plug in (figure G)

  • Wire the lights. Our kit has clips that snap together, piercing the wire to make an electrical connection (figure H)
  • When lights are connected to cable, secure them in the ground with the enclosed spikes (figure I)
