Tiffany and Dustin Gilroy and family
Dustin and Tiffany Gilroy and a non-profit group bought a community blight and turned it into a beautiful home on the inside. The Gilroys don't know what to do with the yard, however, and neighbors are eager to see some change. That's why they've called landscape pro Jason Cameron and the Desperate Landscapes crew to help. Jason has plants, plenty of stain for a super-size porch and landscape lights to end the complaints on Academy Avenue.

The basic steps in the Gilroys' landscape transformation, as well as a list of the new plants, are summarized below. But first, here are views of their yard before and immediately after this Desperate Landscapes makeover.

    Project 1: Stain the porch

Much of the desperation in this yard is tied to the huge wood porch that is in need of staining. Jason puts a team of volunteers to work on the porch early in the day. He chose an exterior-grade stain designed to stand up to the elements.

    Tips for staining a porch:

  • Apply stain in the early morning hours or in the shade. If the sun dries the stain too quickly, it will leave a poor finish.
  • Our team used paint brushes and rollers on extension handles to apply the stain. Extension handles are designed for long strokes and save the back (figure A). Use a brush for the rails.
  • Apply stain with even strokes. Don't leave puddles.
