    Bob McCaslin
In a neighborhood of gorgeous old homes, Bob McCaslin's house sticks out for all the wrong reasons. His neighbors say that Bob is a great guy who let the garden go after a divorce, and now they want to help Bob get the landscape lessons he needs to turn his yard around. DIY's Desperate Landscapes team comes to the rescue. Landscape pro Jason Cameron has plenty of ideas for sprucing up the dreary front door, painting the porch and dressing up the yard with plants. Jason and the crew knock out a weekend's worth of projects in one day — and make Bob's home the pride of Carolina Avenue.

The basic steps in Bob's landscape transformation, as well as a list of the new plants, are summarized below. But first, here are views of his yard before and immediately after this Desperate Landscapes makeover.

Project 1: Limb up the hawthorn

The hawthorn in Bob's yard is overgrown — no surprise because hawthorns are considered fast growers. They need regular pruning to keep from getting out of control. You might be tempted to use a chainsaw, but handsaws are the best way to keep from butchering the tree (figure A).

If you need to prune a hawthorne, follow these tips:

  • Ideally, you should limb up a hawthorn in early spring after all the fruit is gone and before the new leaves arrive, but it won't hurt the tree to prune it later in the season.

  • Cut branches as close to the collar as possible.
