    David and Gwen White
DIY's Desperate Landscapes heads to Westminster Drive, where Gwen White and her husband, David, have recently moved back to her childhood home and a landscape in need of an overhaul. Neighbors in the tight-knit community remember when Gwen's father took impeccable care of the yard. Gwen did not inherit her father's green thumb, and that's why friends want pro landscape Jason Cameron to help Gwen and David fix up the front yard and bring it in line with the rest of the neighborhood.

    Project 1: Remove stumps

Gwen and David cut down some old shrubs years ago but they didn't remove the stumps. The large stumps will be difficult to dig out. Jason opts for using a mini-backhoe (figure A), a great tool if there are a lot of stumps to remove. Small backhoes rent for about $200 daily with a $30 delivery fee. Consider sharing the cost with a neighbor who has some serious digging to do.

The basic steps in Gwen and David's home transformation, as well as a list of her new landscape plantings, are summarized below. But first, here's a gallery of images showing the "before" and "after"-effects of this Desperate Landscapes makeover.
