    Project #2: Patching Driveway

Mollie and Eric's driveway is a mess. It's filled with cracks and holes (figures K and L). Our first target is patching a hole. There is a three-inch wide and four-inch long hole that's in desperate need of repair.

    Steps:

    • Choose the right repair product. In this case, for a hole 1/2 inch or wider, you'll want a product such as cold-patch blacktop. It's also known as asphalt cold patch.

    • Clean the hole with a stiff brush, a pressure washer or a garden hose to get rid of loose debris.

    • Allow crack to dry before filling with patch.

    • Fill hole with patch, slightly overfilling the hole (figures M and N ).

    • Use a tamper to compact the patch (figures O and P).

    • Add more patch if necessary.

    • Cover patch with scrap plywood and drive over it to level it.

    • Allow patch to dry and then seal.

Important: Before patching pavement, make sure there is no rain in the forecast for at ;east 24 hours so that the patches will have time to dry. Also make sure the temperature is at least 50 degrees.

Web Extra: Patching Driveway Cracks: For driveway cracks that are 1/8 to ½ inch wide, use a rubberized asphalt-emulsion crack filler. It can be applied with a caulking gun. Then smooth it with a putty knife.
