Project 1: Refinishing the Rusted Metal Door

Lori's steel front door is very desperate. It's rusty and needs a new coat of paint (figures A and B). We opted not to replace it because it would take too long to order a door with the same custom window as Lori's original door.

    • Break up all the rust with a flathead screwdriver or putty knife.

    • Use body filler which is available at hardware and automotive stores to fill the holes (figures C and D).

    • Let filler dry for about an hour.

    • Apply another layer of body filler and pile it up a bit (figure E).

    • Allow the filler to dry.

    • Use 80 grit sand paper to smooth the body filler (figure F).

    • You might have to repeat the process with filler and sanding to get the best finish.
