Project 1: Refinishing the Rusted Metal DoorLori's steel front door is very desperate. It's rusty and needs a new coat of paint (figures A and B). We opted not to replace it because it would take too long to order a door with the same custom window as Lori's original door.
Break up all the rust with a flathead screwdriver or putty knife. Use body filler which is available at hardware and automotive stores to fill the holes (figures C and D).
Let filler dry for about an hour.Apply another layer of body filler and pile it up a bit (figure E).Allow the filler to dry.Use 80 grit sand paper to smooth the body filler (figure F). You might have to repeat the process with filler and sanding to get the best finish.
