Walter Reeves with the Kababe family: Olivier, Melanie and Tristan
Meet Olivier and Melanie Kababe, who have a wonderful new swimming pool but need some help with the landscape around it. Melanie says Olivier has butchered the landscape by hacking at trees and removing bushes; he did a good job on the fence around the pool but needs a plan and help from Walter Reeves and the DIY Garden Sense team for the landscape. They especially want to get rid of all of the weeds.

The Kababes want a Zenlike escape where their young son, Tristan, can play and where they can entertain their friends.

    Project Timeline
The Florida poolside project took one day to complete.

    Project Details

Walter's design for the Kababes followed two guidelines: First, balance was important. Since the space was so big, Walter designed a landscape that could be seen in its entirety when entering the back yard. Second, he used plants with character that brought a bold, clean look to the landscape.

Specifically, Walter anchored the plan with three palm trees. On each side he used a Triple Roebellini date palm with three trunks and plenty of cover-up for the corners. In the center, he used another Roebellini, this one a double that anchors the long fence line.

Under some of the palms, he added plants like Society Garlic for admiring and cooking plus Dwarf Elephant Ears. He also filled in the fence line with flowers, grasses and shrubs, including Sweet Viburnum, with glossy green leaves, and a Red Hot Hibiscus.

Finally, he put in some Zen-inspired stone for the low-maintenance, clean look the Kababes wanted.
