A traditional dooryard garden has proved to be the ideal solution for this space. The hedgerow, designed to screen the driveway from the house, provides a rich green backdrop for the hydrangeas, old-fashioned shrubs and cold-hardy perennials planted in the border beds. Topiary planters in the four corners of the garden and a cool clay birdbath add structure and visual interest to this vibrant new space (figure D).
