Thirteen hours of work has given this dooryard garden a new lease on life. Now the finishing touches are ready to be added.

Time spent so far: 13 hours.

Seasonal color plants and finishing touches include the following:

    • A clay birdbath offers vertical interest to the garden and invites feathered visitors into the garden (figure A).

    • Pinks (Dianthus Ideal Select 'White Fire'), planted along the front edge of the garden (figure B), and viola (Viola cornuta) add touches of color.

    • Waxleaf privet (Ligustrum texanum) are trained into standard topiaries (also known as patio trees). Planted in four formal French jardinieres, they can be moved around the space as needed. Privet has dark green foliage, is easy to shape, containerizes well and, like all other members of the olive family, produces clusters of softly fragrant white flowers (figure C).

    • Finally, a steppingstone path to the driveway completes the look.
