  • Maureen Gilmer improves the condition of the lawn by opening up and amending the soil.
    From "Weekend Gardening"
    episode WKG-405

The style of a Colonial doorway garden brings life to this small space. The first four hours of this level-3 project have been spent establishing a juniper hedgerow to screen the driveway from the house. Now that the junipers are in place, Maureen Gilmer turns her attention to the lawn.

Time spent so far: 4 hours.

With its compacted soil, which prevents the intake of water and nutrients to the grass, the lawn is in poor condition (figure A). The solution to the problem is to open up the soil, allowing the water and nutrients to penetrate down into the root zone where they can gradually be absorbed (figure B).
