    1. Using a series of columnar junipers, she screens off the back of the yard from the driveway, leaving a space between the junipers for driveway access. New flowerbeds at the edge of the lawn contain deciduous flowering shrubs and cold-hardy perennials. Old-fashioned spike flowers, annuals, patio trees and a birdbath add both form and color to the beds. Even the lawn is slated for renovation.

    2. To improve the view from the house, Maureen lays out a stake-and-string line along the natural curve of the driveway; this will also provide the maximum planting depth between the driveway and the lawn (figure D).

    3. Spartan juniper (Juniperus chinensis) is a columnar juniper that is cold hardy and can be planted in the northeast. Planted in a straight line, the plantings screen the view of the driveway from the kitchen. Their dark green color also provides a backdrop for the flowerbeds (figure E).

    Time spent: 4 hours.
