  • Drought-Tolerant Perennials
  • Maureen Gilmer chooses plants that can withstand dry weather conditions.
    From "Weekend Gardening"
    episode WKG-403

Four hours into this weekend project finds the landscape well on its way to giving the planting area the makeover it needs: the ivy has been trimmed back and the soil grade has been corrected. Maureen Gilmer is now ready to start planting.

Time spent so far: 4 hours.

    • Silver dollar tree (Eucalyptus Cinerea), a primary plant in this landscape, provides a vertical element and marks the entry to the home. The silver-gray color (figure A) creates a strong contrast when paired with bolder-colored plants.

    • Crimson Glory tea tree (Leptospermum Scoparium 'Crimson Glory') is planted in the background (figure B).

    • Little John bottlebrush (Callistemon Citrinus 'Little John') (figure C) will spread and become a ground cover.

    • South African mallow (Anisodontea X Hypomandarum) is planted in the back of the bed. Though covered in delicate pink flowers (figure D), it is tolerant of heat, drought and poor soils.

    • Lilac hibiscus (Alyogyne Huegeuji 'Santa Cruz') (figure E), tall and rangy with shrublike growth habits, is planted behind the mallow.

    • Blue Sapphire (Ceanothus: Ceanothus X 'Blue Sapphire'), with its low spreading habit, is used in the front of the bed.

    • Purple fountain grass (Pennisetum Setaceum 'Rubrum') will camouflage the gas meter while still giving access to it as needed. To ensure there is no contact with the gas lines, Maureen sets out plants that require small planting holes.
