Accenting the HouseThe front flower beds are redesigned and expanded, and the house is brightened up with accent paint on the shutters and front door. First, plants are added behind the fence to soften the walkway. The free-flowing garden has more visual impact. The garden is topped off with mulch for a tidy, finished look (figure A).
Nothing livens up a home as simply as a little accent paint. Two bold colors are chosen to contrast with the natural gray stone exterior: bright red for the door and a dark bluish green for the shutters. The door is removed for easier paint application (figure B), but the shutters are painted in place. To protect the stones around the shutters, butcher paper is taped around their edges (figure C).
Tips: Scrape off any loose pieces of paint. Allow more time for paint to dry in high humidity. The finished exterior is a dramatic improvement, with bold new accent colors, flowing garden walkway and charming wrought iron fence (figure D).
