The final step is the addition of plants, which will add depth, design and interest to the space. They will also frame the fence, which will in turn frame the house when viewed from the end of the swimming pool.

Jessie has chosen the following plant varieties for this project:

Purple fountain grass (Pennisetum setaceum 'Rubrum')
    Chiapas sage (Salvia chiapensis)
Gilt-edge silverberry (Elaeagnus x ebbingei 'Gilt Edge')
Turner's Pitt? mock orange (Pittosporum tobira 'Turner's Variegated Dwarf')
Purple silver grass (Miscanthus sinensis 'Purpurascens')

Expert advice: Bart O'Brien, horticulturist) When landscaping around a pool, one of your principal concerns is that you not end up with leaves and flowers in the pool, clogging up your filter and your skimmer. This particular landscape does a good job in plant selections so that that is not going to be an issue here.

A few pieces of carefully chosen furniture add the crowning touch to the new landscape: since this backyard is located in the South, what could be better than classic white wicker (figure A)?

Expert advice: (Jamie McMurray, garden designer) A lot of times people ask me, What can I do with the ugly chain-link fence I have in my yard? My suggestion is, Get rid of it. Don't try to do anything with it: spray-painting, growing plants -- forget it. Get rid of it. This is a wonderful new fence that's been put in place of the old one (figure B). It's smart; it will never go out of style. It's a really good-looking Craftsman-style fence, and it's been surrounded with some wonderful plantings like salvia chiapensis and miscanthus. The chairs that surround the pool also look great! It's just improved the look and value of this home tenfold. It really looks great!
