The fence and gate are already a great improvement to the property, but the addition of an arbor will give the gate a real sense of entry -- and also echo some of the architectural detail from the house.

Expert advice: (Jamie McMurray, garden designer) This is a great example of how you can dress up a fence and help formalize it a bit. This arbor piece that goes over the top is a great way to do that. It really adds some style and gives the fence a finished look. I really like it.

Jessie and her assistants nail a simple but beautifully angled piece to the top of the gate and finish it with 1x1 strips that echo the trim on the fence panels (figure A).

Then they add weight and further architectural detail to the fenceposts by attaching a wood-and-copper finial to the top of each (figure B). The finials come in two parts; the wooden base screws onto the fencepost (figure C) and is topped with the copper piece (figure D), which allows water to sheet off the sides rather than pooling on top and causing the wood to rot.

Note: Double-stick exterior mounting tape can be used to make the finial more secure.

Additional detailing is added in the form of wooden medallions attached to the gateposts (figure E). These echo the style of the house's roofline. Finally, to break up the strong horizontal space, Jessie lines up blocks of wood (figure F) along the top of the gate slats (figure G).
