Not-So-Sensible Selections- Avoid bulbs that have mold on them or are soft and squishy around the sides. They are dead or sick inside. If you put them in the ground, they simply won't perform.
- For instant color after all the bulbs are in place, put in plants that bloom in the fall, such as violas, violets or dianthus. Avoid daylilies because they're trying to put up lots of foliage at the same time the bulbs are trying to put up their flowers.
- Avoid annual black-eyed Susans, or rudbeckia, and buy perennials, because the annual varieties wont grow back year to year.
