This barren desert yard is well on its way to being a beautiful, colorful Tuscany-inspired paradise. The synthetic yard is almost finished. Seams that need to be met are matched with carpet pieces that have the same grain direction. Plastic underlayment is laid over the sub-base and nailed into place, adhesive is spread over the plastic and the lawn patch is laid in place (figure A). Seams are blended, and as a final touch, a power broom brushes up the new "grass" blades (figure B).
Base gravel is spread, raked out and tamped down in the center circle where the fountain will stand. After checking the gravel for level, the fountain base is seated (figure C). Water is regulated by an electric pump, whose cord runs through a stoppered base at the bottom of the fountain; a center decorative fountain section hides the pump. Putty is used to seal the edges of the second fountain component to the base before the large basin urn is seated at the fountain top. PVC pipe attaches to the pump and directs the water up and out over the urn (figure D).With the fountain in place, lavender and red fountain grass, both hardy enough to live through an annual minimum temperature of 40 degrees (a zone-11 climate) are planted around the circular space (figure E).
