Sod and Seeding Tips From "Grow It & Mow It" episode DMOW-105

Whether you go the sod or seed route, both have simple steps that should be followed.

Laying Sod

1. Smooth out the soil, get rid of all lumps and bumps.

2. Do a soil test to see if your soil needs to be amended. You don’t want to lay fresh sod on poor soil. It may not survive.

3. When laying sod, start at an edge first (figure A), like a curb.

4. Butt the ends of the sod pieces together.

5. Cut off any excess ends with a knife.

6. Use a roller to push down edges of the sod pieces that might be sticking up (figure B).

7. Water thoroughly.

Laying Seed

1. Choose a seed that will grow in your area. Use cool season grasses in the northern parts of the country and use warm season grasses in the southern parts of the country.

2. Spread seed evenly (figure C). Don’t throw it on the ground. Use a spreader.

3. Top dress with straw or hay and don’t put it down in clumps (figure D). Pull some from the bale and scatter it evenly and lightly over the seed. You should be able to see some of the ground when you’re finished.

4. Don’t be afraid to use different types of seed in your yard. You may need to use seed for sun in one part of your yard and seed that grows well in shade for another part.
