Rita and Roger now have a refurbished deck area, a new step landing and a privacy screen for the air-conditioning unit (figure A). Now it's time to tie everything together.
The old swing is disassembled and two holes are drilled in one of the poles. A bracket is attached to the pole, with threaded bolts, to form a T (figure B). This pole is placed in a T formation on another pole and again attached with threaded bolts. The bolts are then trimmed flush with the pole (figure C). The stand is painted green, sunk in the ground and hung with birdfeeders (figure D).
The old, unfinished deck and ugly air-conditioning unit created a messy look in Rita and Roger's back yard (figure E). The new space has a covered, secure storage space, balanced step risers, a screen for the air-conditioning unit and beautiful new landscaping (figure F) (figure G).
Not only did Rita and Roger acquire new skills and confidence in working with new and traditional tools, but by doing the work themselves, with the help of family and friends, they spent just $800, a savings of approximately $1,400.
