The steps from the deck to the yard have a rise of 7" except for the bottom step, which has a jolting 10" drop. To make the bottom step uniform with the rest of the stairs, a frame of 6x6 timbers is built around the bottom step. The area is measured, marked off with landscaping paint and dug out (figure A). As the landscaping timbers are laid in place, they are checked for level before being backfilled with soil (figure B). When all the timbers are in place, they are secured with spikes and holes are drilled in each timber for rebar, which is hammered through the holes into the ground to provide additional stability for the frame (figure C). The frame is then filled in with decorative stone.
The same designs used for the base of the deck are incorporated into the screen for the air-conditioning unit. Holes are dug for the corner posts, then set in place and checked for level. The holes are then backfilled with dirt and firmly tamped into place. Finally, they are secured to the horizontal timbers with lag screws. Just like the deck base, the air-conditioning screen has a solid base with a trellis top, all made from treated Southern pine. As with the deck, horizontal supports are first installed, followed by vertical skirt boards on the base and 2x2 balusters on the top of the screen.Meanwhile Dean marks off the boundary for the new planting beds. Jackie then uses a sod-cutter to remove the soil in strips, which can be reused later, if needed (figure D). New plants are spotted around the beds before being planted, the existing shrubbery is pruned back and all the vegetation is mulched (figure E).
