Rita and Roger's deck renovation continues. The rails and skirt boards have been cut and are partially installed (figure A). Keeping the space around the deck clean and free of debris as the work progresses is a grounds crew made up of family and friends (figure B).

The 2"x2" balusters are installed in sections, alternating with the skirted deck sections. Each baluster is checked for plumb and secured at the top and bottom with the nail gun (figure C). As the vertical sections are finished, Dean installs additional horizontal supports (figure D).

The final panel below the deck is a set of swing doors, which provide access to the hot-tub fuse box and the storage area. A simple frame made from 2x4s is built to fit the dimensions of the opening, then 2x2s are cut to fit the frame and attached. Piano hinges complete the doors (figure E). Shims are used to seat the doors at the correct height, and the hinges are secured to the deck frame with galvanized hardware, which inhibits rusting (figure F).
