This challenging project is nearly complete: the existing deck has been torn down, the old framing has been reinforced and the enlarged deck area is nearly finished (figure A) (figure B).
To connect the rails, the baluster is centered and mounted on each post. Next, the bottom rail is measured and marked every 5", and holes are predrilled at the measured points (figure C). This size rail spacing prevents small children from squeezing through the rails. The balusters are screwed into place using 3-1/2" stainless-steel or coated deck screws (figure D). The top rail is then screwed into place, the assembled railing is fastened to the post and the ornamental railing is added.
This new deck has space for entertaining and playing at the same time (figure E). And when the new container plants get some assistance from a budding, barefoot gardener, clean-up for both toes and decking is just a garden-hose spray away (figure F).
