    episode DGAR-104

    PHOTO
Meet Lori Kunzelman. Lori is a business analyst at an investment company. She lives in an 800-square-foot cottage that was built in 1940. She has a great deck and the beginnings of some landscaping...

Lori's back yard space does have some existing landscaping; one corner is filled in with trees and shrubs and the back of the lot is landscaped too.

    Project Overview
Lori wants a more contemporary landscaping plan to blend and show off her small 800-square-foot cottage. She wants structure in the landscaping — and some color.
She loves her deck, but would like to spice it up a bit.

    Contemporary Gardening Features
Here are the contemporary characteristics our Garden Sense expert will implement with this project.

    • Contemporary gardens are characterized by simplicity.
    • Colors are often striking but used in a minimal way.
    • Hard lines are favored over complex patterns and textures.
    • Contemporary gardens focus on single types of plants rather than the abundance of plants and objects found in other gardens.
    • The good news: Contemporary garden maintenance is rather easy.

    Required Project Time
The contemporary garden project took us one day to complete.

    Project Costs And Advice

    • We provided Lori with a plan that will fill her back yard with lots of ornamental grasses, which provide flair, texture and motion along with low-maintenance perennials and trees.
    • We removed several plants and trees including hollies. They were replanted in a different area.
    • We extended the beds to add more interest and plant materials.
    • We planted a purple birch that will not only add a contemporary feeling to the back yard, but the purple foliage will add interest.
    • We removed her old cedar planters on the deck and replaced them with contemporary pots that we filled with grasses.
    • We planted three birch trees to give her some privacy from the neighbor's dog.
