With the Laniers' new backyard walkway in place, the brick patio and the back deck are now connected both physically and visually with the completion of the center fountain. This formerly boring, muddy backyard has been transformed into a courtyard perfect for parties (figure A) (figure B). Now it's time for the finishing touches (figure C).
Numerous shrubs and plants are used to create the parklike atmosphere. In Savannah, pine straw is used as a natural-looking mulch in planting beds, and although it is most common in southern coastal regions, it is readily available across the United States (figure D).Ornate metal and wood benches are placed along the walkway and the fountain is turned on. Now all that's left to do is sit back, have a glass of sweet tea and enjoy the view (figure E). Oh -- and plan the next party, of course!
