The walkway of Kim and Jody Lanier's new backyard is beginning to take shape, bridging the space between the side patio and the back deck while winding around the space for the new center point of the yard, the fountain (figure A).
Since the design for the patio includes a fountain, Dean has a great way to provide power to the fountain while protecting and hiding the electrical cords. After determining how the electrical lines (and irrigation lines to be added later) will run to connect the power, his solution is to bury a length of PVC pipe in a trench under the pavers with just the ends left exposed (figure B). To keep sand and gravel from clogging the ends of the pipe, the ends are sealed with duct tape. When the paving process is complete and the fountain is in place, the tape can be removed from the pipe ends and the fountain pump cords can be threaded through the pipe to an electrical source. After burying the pipes, replace the stones and sand, and use a hand tamp to level the area before putting the pavers in place.
With the pavers in place, the next step is to add metal edging to keep them from shifting (figure C). Metal timber spikes hold the edging in place, creating an attractive border between the stone and surrounding flower beds (figure D). After edging, sand is brushed over the walkway to fill in any cracks and the plate compactor is worked over the walkway to make sure the bricks are securely seated (figure E).
After stopping to plant some small native shrubs, it's time to install the fountain (figure F). The fountain will visually connect the side patio to the back deck (figure G). A large paver is placed where the fountain will sit and leveled. The fountain pedestal and the basin are placed on the paver and the pump cables are threaded through to the bottom of the pedestal, following manufacturer's instructions. With the pump in place, the cable hole in the pedestal is sealed with a plastic plug. The remaining fountain tiers and hoses are put in place and the tiers are sealed in place with plumber's putty (figure H).
The buried PVC pipe ends are untaped, and the pump cords are threaded through the pipe and connected to an extension cord. The fountain is filled with water and the pump is started to check the water flow.
