For this project, they're planting ostrich ferns, which are some of the oldest plants found on earth. Check out ourlist of all plants used, but remember: your zone may not support the plants we chose. Always use plants appropriate for your zone. With the large boulders in place, the next step is to squeeze waterfall foam between the cracks of the rocks to ensure the water goes where you want it to go (figure C). This type of sealant is especially designed for waterfalls and can be purchased at any home-improvement store.
As a last step, before the waterfall starts, it's a good idea to take care of the area around the new beds and water feature. Spreading down a layer of fescue mix is a great way to protect the ground you've been digging around (figure D). It's a mixture of grass seed, fertilizer, green mulch and a hydroseed tackifier.
When everything is complete, Dean tests the waterfall and the entire crew gets to see the results of their labor (figure E).
