  • Marking the Horseshoe Pit
  • Marking the Horseshoe Pit
    From "Grounds for Improvement"
    episode DGFI-113

After introducing the plan and meeting their volunteer helpers, Dean and Jackie get to work. First Dean and Dusty will mark out where the horseshoe pits will go; next, the crews will dig small trenches that will hold the framed platforms. With the holes dug, Dean and Dusty will start cutting the frame pieces for the platforms and the composite material for the decks. Once all the cuts are made, the team will start assembling the frame, attaching the deck boards and building a backstop with pressure-treated lumber. Finally Jackie and Dusty will install the metal posts, and the horseshoe pits will be complete.

The first step is finding a location for each pit, measuring it and marking it, Regulation horseshoe pits are 40' apart, stake to stake; the pitching platforms will each be about 8' wide and sit recessed in the ground 1"-2" deep.

After picking the location, Dean and Dusty measure the 40' between the pitching platform and the pit. When the area has been carefully measured, they outline both sections with landscape marking paint (figure A) in preparation for the next step: digging the trenches to hold the platform. They do this for each of the two pits.
