With the pond structure in place, the next step is creating the water garden. Transplanting aquatic plants is a simple and cost-effective way to bring in new plants to the pond.
To transplant a Cyprus papyrus like the one featured in this episode, first release the rootball from the pot. Once the rootball is free of the pot, use a spade to separate the plant into sections. Return one section to the pot and replace in the original pond. It should adapt immediately. If you cannot replace the transplant immediately, protect the roots until you can put it in its permanent home. When it comes time to decide where you want the water to flow in your new waterfall, it's worth taking the time to pick out the stones carefully (figure A). Using a combination of flat and round rocks makes it easier to have several combinations for flow patterns. How you place each rock will determine where the water goes. The last main step to installing your water feature is securing the pump to the skimmer according to the manufacturer's directions. Initially you'll want to check the pump about once a week to make sure it's working properly. During the fall season, however, it's important to check more often because falling leaves can clutter up the net inside the pump. The pump itself will never clog up because of the net installed, which comes with the water feature kit.
