Adding On ... with Pavers

To make the patio space a more inviting for the family to use, it's expanded using landscape pavers. Then, the planting bed around the patio is enlarged and a wooden planter is used to frame one side of the patio ....

Project time: 4 hours

1. Using landscape spray paint, the boundary is drawn for the new planting bed.

2. A sod cutter is used to cut the sod and the slices of sod are removed from the soil surface (figure A).

3. Using a level attached to a board (figure B), the soiled is checked for level; sand and soil are used to level the grade where needed.

4. The pavers are laid and leveled in a pattern that mimics the design of the redwood fence extension.

5. Bronze carpet sedum (Sedum Spurium 'Bronze Carpet') is planted between the paver rows for a striking color contrast (figure C). Sedum is an excellent choice for the location; it can thrive in the sand/soil mix and because it is a succulent, it doesn't require much water.

6. A planter box will serve as a division along one side of the patio (figure D). Fir boards again mimic the design of the redwood fence extension and the wood is also stained with an oil-based stain.
