With the tall shrubs in place, now it's time to add some medium-height shrubs.

    Steps

    1. Maureen brings in three types of hydrangeas. The mophead hydrangea (Hydrangea macrophylla) is the most typical. It produces flowers called mopheads (figure A). Blue mophead hydrangeas turn pink in alkaline soil conditions. The lacecap hydrangea (Hydrangea macrophylla normalis) (figure B) and variegated lacecap hydrangea (Mariesii Variegata’) (figure C) are added as well.

Expert Tip: (Frank McDonough, botanist) Hydrangeas need to be planted in the fall or early spring.

    2. Cool darker foliage plants are added. The nandina (figure D) and Chinese fringe flower (figure E) offer brilliant color from spring to fall.

    3. Spanish broom (Spartium junceum) are bright and exciting (figure F). A knockout rose (figure G) will add tons of color, too. The azaleas add so much as well (figure H).

    4. Ornamental grasses are set on both sides of the border. The evergreen miscanthus (Miscanthus transmorrisonensis) is the most cold tolerant of the miscanthus species (figure I). If you live in the far north, you’ll be happy with this. A dwarf butterfly bush (Buddleja davidii nonhoensis) will stay much smaller on the other end (figure J).

    5. Pink groundcover rose (Rose X /Noatraum’) sit beautifully up front (figure K).
