We spent two hours clearing out where the border will go and then marking where the shrubs will be placed. Now, it's time to do some planting!

Steps1. The shrubs will be set against five evergreens (figure A). Maureen has chosen the spartan juniper (Juniperus chinensis Spartan). These are cold hearty plants. They will be placed four to five feet apart. This spacing will allow a pattern of dark and light in the gardens background. 2. With the junipers in place, the highest tiered shrubs come in to play. Super red flowering quince (Chaenomeles japonica Moned) is probably the first bloomer youll see in early spring (figure B). For a tidy appearance, shear flowering quince annually to shape. Expert Tip: (Sarah Haeffele, Monrovia Growers) Evergreen shrubs should be pruned in early spring or fall. 3. Another garden shrub, eastern snowball (Viburnum opulus Sterile) is brought in. These white snowball-like flowers make a showy display in summer (figure C). These will grow up to 12 feet tall, and 10 feet wide. 4. Butterfly bushes are added. The pink delight butterfly bush (Buddleja dayidii Pink Delight) will grow eight to 10 feet tall (figure D). In winter, they will freeze and grow back in the spring. The harlequin butterfly bush (Buddleija davidii Harlequin) gives the illusion of light in a darker corner of the garden (figure E).
